Bolino is my favorite engraving style although, in my opinion, it is the most misunderstood. Composed of microscopic
dots and lines, a bolino engraving is much like the pixels on your high definition television. The technique allows the
engraver to approach his work with great precision and to include fine detail. In fact, someone once defined
bolino merely as engraving which retains its detail under high magnification. Well, I like to think that it is much more than
that! To me, the great appeal of the bolino technique is that it allows the engraver to completely individualize a
subject, to make it unique and special. Stated differently, the English Setter I engrave should not be just any Setter;
it should be "your" Setter. Bolino allows me to depict real life to that high degree. The engraving of the
Snow Leopard on the Mauser floorplate above is about 5X its actual size. Although it would easily fit
on the end of your little finger, I like to think it still has a certain predatory feel to it. That's not the same
cat at left but, you get the same cold feline glare. - Jeff Parry
